Following on from the incredible critical success of Persona 5, which launched to near universal praise back in 2017, Persona 5 Royal is designed to both expand and enhance the original game’s story. To do this, Royal introduces a new Phantom Thief, Kasumi Yoshizawa, a new Palace, new music, extra plot and social elements, and an entirely playable third semester. Royal also includes support for the Playstation 4 Pro, allowing the game to take full advantage of the console’s improved hardware.
For those worried that even Royal won’t be enough of a reunion with Joker and his gang of heart-stealing Phantom Thieves, fear not. Earlier in the year Atlus announced another Persona 5 game, Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikes, for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. While some speculated the possibility of a Switch port, Phantom Strikes is actually an entirely new game with the same cast. Early game-play shows what looks like more of a Musou style, a Japanese genre of games that are all about facing down hordes of enemies in real-time battles. Although there is no western release date for Phantom Strikes yet, it’s been confirmed to launch in Japan in early 2020.
Persona 5 Royal is out now in Japan and releases worldwide on March 31, 2020 for PS4.
