Persona 4 has spawned a long list of adaptations, sequels, and spin-offs. It’s not just Persona 4 Golden either. There’s a fighting game called Persona 4 Arena and a rhythm game called Persona 4 Dancing All Night. The game also received an anime adaptation, manga adaptation, stage play, and more.

Notably, while each of these pieces of Persona 4 media features the same cast of characters and party members, the protagonist has been renamed several times over. So what is the real name of the Persona 4 Golden main character? And what are some other canonically accurate options?

What is the Real Name of the Persona 4 Golden Main Character?

The official name of Persona 4 Golden’s main character is Yu Narukami. While the character didn’t have an official name for some time, he was officially dubbed Yu Narukami in Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4: The Animation.

That said, Yu Narukami isn’t his name across all Persona media. In video game releases ahead of Persona 4 Arena, his name was kept vague. He’s referred to as Hayato Asakawa in Persona 4 Visualive, a series of stage plays based on the games, and is Souji Seta in the official Persona 4 manga.

While this might sound unusual, multiple names for the main character is something of a tradition for the Persona series at this point. Both the Persona 3 and Persona 5 protagonists had different names depending on the piece of media they appeared in.

Persona 3’s male protagonist is officially named Makoto Yuki in the games, the series of Persona 3 movies, and the spin-off rhythm game Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight. However, he was named Minato Arisato in the official Persona 3 manga series and was Sakuya Shiomi across all the Persona 3 stage plays.

Persona 5 was no different. The main character’s name is Ren Amamiya in Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, and every installment of Persona 5 The Animation. However, his name was Akira Kurusu in the Persona 5 manga. In the stage plays based on the game, Persona 5 The Stage, the main character had a different name with each performance.

Persona 4 Golden is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Game Pass.
