Persona 4 Golden first released on PlayStation Vita in Japan on June 24th 2012 before later arriving in North America on November 20th 2012. The game is an expanded remaster of 2008’s Persona 4 for PlayStation 2, and introduces new story and gameplay elements and a slew of new quality of life improvements over the original game. In 2020, over three years after the release of its sequel, Persona 5, Atlus brought Persona 4 Golden to PC, marking the mainline series’ debut on a non-PlayStation platform.

Earlier this year, Atlus announced that it would be bringing Persona 4 Golden to consoles including PS4, PS5, Xbox platforms, and Nintendo Switch alongside Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Portable. While the Persona 5 Royal ports arrived last month, the Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable ports are gearing up for release in January, but not before Atlus gives current PC owners of Persona 4 Golden a major update. As discovered by Twitter users Sewer56 and Rudiger, pre-release files for the update note that Persona 4 Golden will be receiving new features such as a quick save/suspend feature and new graphics settings. Both users also note that the entire game’s file system has been reworked, making existing mods incompatible.
Rudiger’s Twitter thread elaborates further on what the update will introduce for the game, and some elements that will not be changed, such as the implementation of motion blur and the controversial Denuvo DRM inclusion. The update will introduce many new features to bring it closer to the remastered version releasing in January however, including new credits for the localization staff and a rebranding of the game called “Persona 4 Golden Remastered Edition” that appears in the original credits now. According to the data miners, the new update vastly improves performance for the game, which is definitely a positive.
While Persona 4 Golden is a critically acclaimed game and the reviews of its Steam port reflect that, many fans were left unsatisfied with the newly introduced bugs and downgrades the PC version featured at launch. While this update does not fix everything, early signs indicate that it will be a huge improvement on the Persona 4 Golden experience for PC users.
Persona 4 Golden is available now for PC and PlayStation Vita. The game will release on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on January 19, 2023.
