Disney recently revealed that it would be delivering a live-action remake of the old movie, which isn’t surprising given the number of live-action remakes that have been released in the last few years. The remake is set to be produced by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo, although there’s no confirmation on a director yet.

In the old movie, DeVito played Hercules’ reluctant teacher and friend Philoctetes, a satyr who had trained many a hero before and become disillusioned over the years. The film’s young hero, Hercules, sets out to prove himself worthy of godhood, aided by Phil and the enigmatic Meg and constantly hindered by Hades, the god of the underworld. The new movie is the latest of Disney’s scheduled remakes, backed by the Russo brothers’ production company AGBO, and Hercules also is slated to be written by Dave Callaham (who also wrote Wonder Woman 1984).

On a positive note, there may be a good chance for DeVito to be offered the role once again; James Earl Jones voiced Mufasa in 1994 animated version of The Lion King, and he came back to the role of Mufasa for last year’s computer-generated remake as well. That bodes well for fans banking on DeVito’s return, and the actor has recently starred in Tim Burton’s Dumbo remake as well.

Perhaps if Disney is willing to do that, they’ll bring DeVito back on board whenever Hercules starts filming. Only time will tell for sure.
